Slowly it's happening

Renovation renovation renovation. The four rooms are slowly coming together, but there is still more than plenty to be done before I can share the ready spaces. Here are some photos of what we have done so far. Thinking back it seems so little but it's Bali time, so everything happens so slow!

To make the window of room 9 bigger, we had to expand the renovation outside the 3rd floor.

I wanted to make the window 3 times bigger than what it was to make sure wont waist the view.

The rooms are getting to the point where it will be a lot more interesting to share some photos since it wont be just concrete and dust. Can't wait to see them done!

Busy days

Long time no hear! Lately my "once a week" posting haven't been so succesfull but I'll try to get back on tracks. Everything is going well here and we have started the renovation of the first room. I've been going around the island trying to find new materials for the new rooms as well as trying to find the final details for the previous ones. We already bought more than 75 square meters of marble and limestone. Can't wait to get them installed.

Some big ceremonies have slowed our workers a bit down, but I hope in the up coming days we get to the good speed again. We have already asked more men to join the constuction so we could start renovating the other room aswell. Other than working I've just been visiting some nice rice terraces, hot spring and made new connections and ideas for photos. More about those later.

Graduation work

It's finally done! Last Thursday I had my final presentation and basically I'm done with my school. On above there is a virtual replica of the book I made about my final project in Bali. Unfortunately it is only in Finnish, but there is an abstract in English and many many pictures.

My original plan was to share the process here on real time, but since the actual doing took so much time and energy, in the end I only made few posts from Bali. Now after the presentation there is again time to breath and share the work - better late than never :)

Working time

Back in Ubud and started my work here.

Im doing my graduation work here at my friends' hotel. We are renovating two old rooms and slowly the plans are getting togther. So far I have only made the data of the rooms with all the measurements and material analyses, but hopefully soon we can start to take down the old ceiling and floor tiles ect.

I'll try to post more about the process once we get it really started!

Back to Bali

As they say, you never visit there just once...

Even I'm still settling back to living in Finland, it's time to go again. I feel so fortuned to be able to do my graduation work in Bali, in Ubud. The purpose is to design and renovate two hotelrooms of my friend's hotel, Gayatri Bungalows, as well as to study the local styles, materials and craftmanship.

The two months will be filled with new things, good friends, a lot of interesting work and great time, but on the other hand it is sad to leave all my friends and family again here in Finland and miss the joy of their company.

I'll try to share pictures and stories of my work and stay in Bali. Here are some photos of the Gayatri bungalows I took the year before last year. Can't wait to return there!

The forever project

Toilet. Almost exactly one year ago (when I started this blog - how the time flies!) I told you about how horrible the toilet was. During the year I've tried to fix it from here and there without money or time, but now I thought I share the progress:

This is how it was:  

I was curious to see whats under the horrible yellowish plastic carpet. The same pattern that were on the wall. I also figured that the floor boards were broken because it bend down a bit. I called my landlord and he fixed it and installed new light gray plastic carpet (just when I thought I got rid off plastic carpets...)

I also decided to remove the wall plastic but once again the outcome wasn't pretty

After the walls were empty I painted everything in white including that dark purple roof (just to get a clean page before inventing something more personal). In the pictures the other wall is still unpainted

All that happened before the summer break. Now with new strength (well having a flu) I continued by making that new shelf to hide some of that plumbing and by getting that new bamboo carpet

My auntie Kaija gave me one of her fashion figures (now I have two :)) It still is looking for its place but I think the black parts looks nice with all that white around

The room still looks a bit impersonal but at least it looks clean and people doesn't get scared after seeing it :) It is easy to continue fixing it now and the next thing i would love to get is a proper mirror cabinet to get all my stuff into it.

Blackboard wall

Every since I heard about the blackboard paint, I wanted to have one entire wall I can draw to! I also made a stripe of magnetic paint under the actual black wall. It's useful to have a huge notebook on your entry :)

Farewell yellow walls

It wasn't just the color but also the dirt that made me paint the walls - as soon as possible.

So with my brother and friend we took the paint cans and it was bye bye to the yellow.


Im not so into the idea of white walls but it does give a fresh start, and with that floor it looks bright. None of the furniture is actually mine (i find them quite horrible) but during the renovation i think they can be there. After all i don't have that many furniture own by myself, so covering that sofa it might be quite ok :)
